On November 28, 2003 police in Anshan, in Liaoning province, announced the arrest of Zhou Wen, thirty-eight, a taxi driver. Six young women who had taken his cab alone late at night in June and July 2003 had been strangled. Chinese reporting called him the Taxi Demon.
He was reported to have said that he hated women, and that this had begun when his wife had an abortion without telling him. That is the motive given in the announcement, and it is the kind of statement that reaches the outside world only through a police press conference.
