Wayne Clifford Boden was born in Dundas, Ontario, in 1948. He was a good-looking, socially easy young man who worked in sales, and he had no difficulty meeting women, which is a large part of why the case took as long as it did.
Between July 1969 and May 1971 he raped and strangled Norma Vaillancourt, a twenty-one-year-old teacher, Shirley Audette, twenty, Marielle Archambault, twenty, and Jean Way, twenty-four, all in Montreal. Each of the bodies bore deep bite marks on the breasts. There was no forced entry in any case; each woman had let him in. The Montreal press called him the Vampire Rapist.
The others were Shirley Audette, twenty; Marielle Archambault, twenty; and Jean Wray, twenty-four.
In May 1971 he moved to Calgary, and later that month killed Elizabeth Porteous, a thirty-three-year-old teacher, in the same way. A witness had seen her with a man, and a cufflink was found in the flat and a distinctive car parked outside. Boden was picked up beside the car within days.
An orthodontist, Gordon Swann, matched the bite marks on Elizabeth Porteous's body to Boden's dentition and testified to twenty-nine points of similarity. It was the first conviction in North America obtained on dental evidence. He was convicted of her murder in 1972 and of three of the Montreal killings, and given four life sentences. He died of skin cancer in prison in Kingston on March 27, 2006.
