Waldo Grant (November 3, 1946 - June 6, 2023) killed four young men in New York City between September 1973 and December 1976. Born in Bulloch County, Georgia, he moved to the city around 1971 after a short marriage ended, and was living alone in a small apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side, known to neighbours as a quiet loner.
Philip Mitchell, 18, was beaten with an iron bar, stabbed, and thrown from the roof of Grant's West 91st Street building on September 14, 1973. George Muniz, 23, was stabbed and left in a trash container. Harold Phillips, 30, was beaten to death in an East Harlem apartment. On December 29, 1976 children playing in Central Park found the dismembered body of Harry Carillo, 16, whom Grant had known for about six months; he had cut the body into three pieces with a saw, bagged the remains and taken them to the park in a shopping cart.
Grant had last been seen with Carillo and was questioned repeatedly over a fortnight. On January 10, 1977, after five hours of questioning, he confessed to that killing and shortly afterwards to the other three. He was convicted on four counts of second-degree murder, sentenced to life in 1978, and died in custody at Albany Medical Center on June 6, 2023, aged 76.
