Verry Idham Henyansyah was born in 1978 and lived at Jombang in East Java, working as a hairdresser and a dance instructor. He was known nationally afterwards simply as Ryan.
Between 2006 and 2008 he killed eleven people, among them a woman and her small daughter, and several men he had been involved with. He beat them with a crowbar and stabbed them, and buried most of the bodies in the garden behind his house.
The victims named in the record are Nanik Kristanti, twenty-eight, and her three-year-old daughter Silvia Ramadhani; Agustinus Fitri Setyawan; Zainul Abidin; Muhammad Aksoni; Guruh Setyo Pramono; Grady Gland Adam; Muhammad Asrori; and Vincentius Yudhy Priyono.
The case broke in July 2008 when a dismembered body was found in Jakarta and traced to him, and the excavation of the garden at Jombang followed.
The Indonesian coverage was enormous and much of it fixed on his sexuality rather than on the killings, in a way that was widely criticised at the time and afterwards.
He was arrested on July 15, 2008 and sentenced to death on April 6, 2009. Indonesia carries out executions intermittently and he remains under sentence.
