Barry Scott Holstone, thirty, and his sister Patreace Holstone, thirty-two, were killed at Todd Givens’s home in Tulare County, California, on April 1, 2001. Givens shot Barry repeatedly and, the state’s summary of the case says, stabbed him with a sickle when the bullets ran out. The bodies were put into Patreace’s car, driven to an olive orchard a short distance away and burned, which the prosecution said was done to stop them being identified.
Givens and Barry Holstone belonged to the same organization. Both were members of the Nazi Low Riders, a white prison gang subordinate to the Aryan Brotherhood, and court records describe the case as the murder of a fellow member and his sister. Prosecutors argued the killings were ordered because Holstone was believed to have stolen from Givens and the gang wanted him dead. Givens argued that he had acted alone. His wife, Lacey Givens, was also convicted in connection with the killings; accounts of her part differ, one describing her as having helped dispose of the bodies and the state’s own case summary saying she shot Patreace. While he awaited trial, three knives were found in his cell in the Tulare County jail.
He was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and of arson, sentenced to death, and received on San Quentin’s death row on July 23, 2004.
In July 2020 a correctional officer collecting breakfast trays on the row was attacked through the food port of Givens’s cell. The corrections department said Givens tried to cut the officer’s neck with a weapon made from two razor blades and a sharpened piece of broken nail clippers, and that the officer was cut on the hand as he grabbed it and needed five stitches. Givens was moved to the Adjustment Center while it was investigated. Over his years inside he received two further life sentences, for manufacturing or possessing a deadly weapon as a prisoner and for assault. Corrections reporting has also linked him, under his gang name “Stomper,” to the stabbing of an Aryan Brotherhood enforcer who has since died; no charge from that attack has been reported.
California has not executed anybody since 2006 and has had a formal moratorium since 2019, and the state has been moving condemned prisoners off San Quentin’s death row into other institutions. By October 2025 Givens was at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad. At about 9:52 on the morning of October 23, staff watching a recreation yard saw him and two other life-sentenced prisoners, Robert England, sixty-one, and Ray Waldron, fifty-one, attacking a fourth man with improvised weapons. Staff ordered them to stop; by the time officers reached the man the attack was over. He was pronounced dead at 10:04. Three improvised weapons were recovered and the three men were moved to restricted housing.
The dead man was Todd S. Morgan, fifty-seven, known inside as “Fox.” He had been in state prison since May 2002, serving life under California’s three-strikes law for second-degree burglary and robbery, weapons and drug offenses, and was also serving a twenty-one-year federal sentence. The Los Angeles Times described him as a reputed leader of the Aryan Brotherhood, the gang to which the Nazi Low Riders answer, and federal agents had in 2020 tapped the phone of his associate Kenneth Bash in an investigation of drug and contraband smuggling into Salinas Valley.
Givens’s part in Morgan’s death rests on the corrections department’s account of what its staff saw, not on any finding by a court. The investigation was opened jointly by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office and the Monterey County Coroner, and the Office of the Inspector General was notified. No charge against Givens, England or Waldron has been publicly reported.
The date of the Holstone killings is given two ways. CBS News, working from the corrections department’s 2025 release, put them in 1997. The state’s case summary and the court records cited by the Los Angeles Times give 2001, and a 2001 killing fits a conviction and death sentence in 2004.
