Bunday was born in 1948 and was a technical sergeant stationed at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. He was married with children.
Between 1979 and 1981 five young women, several of them teenagers, were abducted around Fairbanks, raped and shot, and their bodies left in the country outside the town.
The five were Glinda Sodemann, nineteen; Doris Oehring, eleven; Marlene Peters, twenty; Wendy Wilson, sixteen; and Lori King, nineteen.
The investigation is the reason the case is cited. Alaska State Troopers asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation's behavioural science unit for a profile, and the description produced was used to narrow the field and to structure the interviews. Bunday was identified, questioned, and made admissions, and the case is presented in the American profiling literature as one of the technique's early successes.
He was not arrested immediately. On March 16, 1983, having left Alaska for Texas, he drove his motorcycle deliberately into an oncoming dump truck and was killed.
There was therefore no trial, no charge tested and no verdict. The five killings rest on his admissions and on the investigation's conclusions.
