Between April 8 and May 7, 1992, six shop assistants were murdered in specialty stores close to Interstate 70 in Indiana, Missouri and Kansas. Robin Fuldauer at a shoe shop in Indianapolis. Patricia Magers and Patricia Smith at a bridal shop in Wichita. Michael McCown, the only male victim, at a ceramics shop in Terre Haute. Nancy Kitzmiller at a shoe shop in St Charles, Missouri. Sarah Blessing at a gift shop in Raytown.
The pattern was rigid. Small shops with one person on duty, in the afternoon, on or near the interstate, in strip malls with parking at the front. The victims were shot once in the head with a .22 pistol at close range, and very little was taken. Five of the six were small women with dark hair worn short, which investigators have always taken to mean something.
In 1993 two women were shot in similar shops in Texas and ballistics matched the same weapon.
There have been thousands of tips, a composite sketch circulated for thirty years, and repeated appeals including a nationally publicised push in 2019 and further genetic genealogy work since. The case is open and the FBI still lists it.
