Steven Dean Gordon, born in 1969, and Franc Cano abducted, raped and killed four women in Anaheim and Santa Ana, Orange County, California, between 2013 and 2014: Kianna Jackson, 20, Josephine Vargas, 34, Martha Anaya, 28, and Jarrae Estepp, 21. Both men were registered sex offenders and both were homeless. Only Estepp's body was ever recovered, found at an Anaheim recycling plant in March 2014; the other three have never been found.
Both were wearing GPS monitors at the time, and the tracking data placed them at the relevant locations, which is what broke the case. Gordon was arrested on April 11, 2014. He represented himself at trial, told the jury he deserved to die, and was sentenced to death on February 3, 2017. Cano was separately convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
California has not carried out an execution since 2006 and has operated a formal moratorium since 2019, so the sentence stands unexecuted.
