Dube killed in two areas. The first was the Mhlumayo valley near Ladysmith in northern KwaZulu-Natal, in May 2001. He then moved to Johannesburg and killed children on and around the mine dumps on the southern edge of the city, the youngest of them nine. They were raped, strangled or beaten, and the bodies were left in the dumps and in the veld.
Those named in the record are Rashunthee Singh, thirty-eight, at Ladysmith; and in Johannesburg Lukhanyo Kuwane, ten; Tina Bernardes, eleven; Nomnikelo Jumba, fourteen; Thabo Dlongolo, fourteen; Anele Mbuku, nine; and his cousin Siyabonga Mbuku, twelve.
He was arrested on November 9, 2003, and further killings followed in the file into January 2004. On August 23, 2006 he was convicted of seven murders and three rapes and sentenced to ten life sentences plus 114 years for the remaining counts.
The case is one of a series of South African investigations of the early 2000s in which children disappeared from informal settlements and the mine dump areas around Johannesburg.
