Martynov was born in 1962. He was sentenced to fifteen years in 1992 for murder and released in 2005. He was homeless for much of the period that followed, moving across Russia from the Vladimir region to Yekaterinburg.
Between 2005 and 2010 he killed women, stabbing or strangling them. Investigators said the motive was not sexual but personal antagonism. He was arrested and on November 10, 2012 was sentenced to life imprisonment.
