Nakada was born on February 28, 1973 in Peru, of Japanese descent, and had a violent childhood he described at length after his arrest. He called himself the Apostle of Death.
Between January 1, 2005 and December 27, 2006 he shot people in and around Huaral, in the Lima region, with a nine millimetre pistol. The victims were chosen from groups he said he had been instructed to remove from the world: people who used drugs, men he took to be homosexual, women working as prostitutes. Peruvian reporting called him el Apostol de la Muerte, the Apostle of Death.
The dead named in the record include Carlos Edilberto Merino Aguilar, Teresa Cotrina Abad, Walter Sandoval Osorio, Carlos Walter Tarazona Toledo, Gerardo Leonardo Cruz Libia, Maria Veronica Tolentino Pajuelo, Luis Enrique Moran Cervantes, Pedro Omar Carrera Carrera and Enoch Eliseo Felix Zorrilla.
He was convicted of seventeen murders and sentenced on July 14, 2010 to thirty-five years. He told the court and the press that the true figure was twenty-five, and the range reflects the difference between what was proved and what he said about himself.
Two points about the sentence. Thirty-five years is a determinate term and, imposed in 2010, runs to the middle of the 2040s; Peruvian law at the time reserved life imprisonment for a narrow set of offences. And nothing accessible records anything about him since the sentencing, so the entry cannot say where he is now.
The account he gave of his motive is his own, delivered after arrest and repeated to journalists, and the entry presents it as that. What the court found was seventeen shootings of people whose only common feature was that he had decided what they were.
