Runge was born in 1970 and lived in the Chicago area. He had a conviction for a sexual assault committed as a teenager and was on parole for much of the period in which he killed.
Between 1995 and 1997 he attacked women in Cook and DuPage counties, raping and strangling or stabbing them and dismembering several of the bodies. Six women and a ten-year-old girl died; two of the victims were a mother and her daughter, killed in the same attack.
The seven who died were Stacy Frobel, twenty-five; Yolanda Gutierrez, thirty-five, and her ten-year-old daughter Jessica Muniz; Dzeneta Pasanbegovic, twenty-two; Amela Pasanbegovic, twenty; Dorota Dziubak, thirty; and Kazimiera Paruch, forty-three.
He was charged in June 2001 after DNA linked him to the series, and was convicted and sentenced to death on June 6, 2006.
Illinois abolished capital punishment in 2011 and commuted every remaining death sentence, so he is serving life imprisonment without parole.
