Olaf Däter was born on September 25, 1969 in Bremerhaven, in northern Germany. He had worked as a geriatric nurse, and the women he killed were women he had nursed.
Between June 5 and 14, 2001 he killed five of them. They knew him and let him into their flats. He attacked each woman from behind and suffocated her, using his whole bodyweight; he was a heavy man. He intended to take money afterwards, and on several occasions failed to, because a doorbell interrupted him. German reporting called him the Granny-Killer.
The doctors who examined the first four did not notice the severe internal injuries and certified the deaths as natural. That became a matter of intense public discussion in Germany, and it is the reason five women could die in ten days in one town before anyone was looking for a killer.
He attacked a sixth woman and she survived. She gave the police his name, and that is what ended it.
He was arrested and confessed. He said his motive was money: he was deeply in debt at the time.
The Landgericht Bremen sentenced him to life imprisonment in November 2001, finding particular gravity of guilt, which under German law bears on any later release.
The press called him the Oma-Mörder, the granny killer. The victims are not named in anything accessible here.
