Laura Babcock had been missing since the summer of 2012, and the death of Wayne Millard that November had been ruled a suicide. On April 10, 2014, police charged his son, Dellen Millard, with first-degree murder in both deaths.
Millard, 28, was already facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of Tim Bosma, 32, of Ancaster, Ontario, whose remains were found in May 2013, about a week after he left home to go on a test drive in a pickup truck he had advertised for sale online. The new charges were laid on Thursday in a Toronto court. Mark Smich, 26, who was charged alongside Millard in Bosma's death, was also charged with first-degree murder in Babcock's death, and a 21-year-old Toronto woman was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder in the Bosma case.
Babcock, 23, had been romantically involved with Millard. Phone records showed that she had contact with him on July 3, 2012, police said, and she was reported missing to Toronto police on July 14. The Bosma investigation had brought police to Waterloo Region, where they spent many days at a farm on Roseville Road and a hangar at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, both owned by Millard; as that case progressed, they began looking into his father's death and Babcock's disappearance.
"She's been missing almost two years now. That whole time, we've been not just hopeful but confident that Laura would return safe and sound one day," her uncle, Thomas Ryan, told CTV News. "To get this news is absolutely devastating."
CTV News gave June 2012 as the month Babcock vanished, while its Kitchener station said she was last seen in July 2012 in Toronto's Roncesvalles neighbourhood; police said her last known contact with Millard was on July 3.
