Vicky Hamilton, 15, vanished in February 1991 while waiting for a bus home in Scotland, and had been missing for more than 16 years. On November 14, 2007, remains found buried in the back garden of a house in Margate, Kent, were identified as hers.
Peter Tobin had moved from Bathgate, West Lothian, to Margate in March 1991, a month after Vicky disappeared. After his conviction for the murder of Angelika Kluk in May 2007, police investigating Vicky's case found her DNA on a knife in the loft of his former house in Bathgate, and in July he was charged with her abduction. The search of the garden at 50 Irvine Drive began on November 12. On November 15, Tobin, 61, appeared at a private hearing at Linlithgow Sheriff Court accused of killing her.
On November 16, a second body was found in the same garden. Police had been searching for the remains of Dinah McNicol, 18, who vanished in the summer of 1991 on her way home to Essex from a music festival in Hampshire, and on November 20 the remains were confirmed as hers. "After 16 long years we are thankful we can finally grieve for Vicky and give her a proper burial," Vicky's family said in a statement.
KentOnline reported that Vicky Hamilton's remains were found on November 12, while the Daily Record's timeline dated the find to November 13.
