Chen Yongfeng was 20 and collected trash for a living in Wenzhou. In December 2003 a court there sentenced him to death for killing 10 of the people he worked alongside.

The Wenzhou Intermediate People's Court found that from February to May 2003 Chen had lured fellow collectors from the trash collection site to his home, killed them there and disposed of their bodies at about four places around the city, Chinese state media reported. A Reuters report dated the sentence to December 5. The motive appeared to be money: the killings netted him a total of 10,032 yuan. In a separate civil suit, he was ordered to pay about nine times that amount in funeral expenses to the victims' families.

The case was one of several serial killings that shook China at the end of 2003. Days later, a court in Henan sentenced Huang Yong to death for killing 17 teenagers and young men.

Reuters described Chen's victims as competitors in the trash business, while AFP described them as his co-workers. Reuters dated the sentence to December 5, while AFP reported it on December 15.
