Macon was born in 1979 and lived in Lansing, in Ingham County, Michigan. He was known as Chilly.
Between 2004 and 2007 six women were beaten to death in the city, several of them elderly, in their homes or in the open. He was arrested on August 28, 2007 and pleaded guilty, and on June 18, 2008 received two terms of life imprisonment without parole.
The six were Ruth Hallman, seventy-six; Deborah Kaye Cooke, thirty-six; Debra Renfors, forty-six; Carolyn Kronenberg, sixty; Sandra Eichorn, sixty-four; and Karen Delgado-Yates, forty-one.
One of the deaths was that of Carolyn Kronenberg, a teacher killed at Lansing Community College in 2005. Claude McCollum, a man with an intellectual disability who was living around the campus, had been convicted of that murder in 2006 and sentenced to life. His conviction rested on a statement taken from him during police questioning in which he said he might have done it, and which his lawyers argued was the product of suggestion rather than memory.
When Macon was arrested, the Ingham County prosecutor reviewed the Kronenberg case against him. Surveillance footage was then identified that placed McCollum elsewhere at the time of the killing, footage that had existed throughout. His conviction was vacated in 2007 and the charge dismissed in 2008. He had served about two years, and he later brought a civil action over the investigation.
So the entry records six deaths, two convictions, and a man who went to prison for one of them on the strength of a statement he should never have been asked to make while the footage that cleared him sat unexamined.
It is marked as a miscarriage of justice for that reason.
