On November 22, 1965 Maggie Young, thirty-eight, of Aiea, Hawaii, drowned her five children in the bathtub: her son, and her four daughters, Janice, five, Judith, three, Jeanette, two, and Jessica, eight months. The son's name appears in the sources as both James Francis and James Frank Jr, and his age as eight; neither can be resolved here.
She was found unfit to stand trial in 1966 and committed to the state hospital at Kaneohe. On July 25, 1966 she left the ward, reached a chicken shed on the hospital grounds, and killed herself there.

This is a single act, not a serial case. It is also, together with Andrea Yates and Constance Fisher in this archive, one of a group of cases in which a mother drowned her children while severely mentally ill, and in which the psychiatric history was known to somebody beforehand. In 1965 there was no mechanism to act on it and no vocabulary in the reporting for what had happened.
