The contemporary reporting gives her as Mrs G. R. McAnich, aged thirty-five, and does not record her own first name, which is itself a fact about how the death of a woman was written up in 1937.
On October 31, 1937, at the family home near Norwalk, Iowa, she shot five of her seven children and then shot herself. Two children survived.
