Lowell Edwin Amos (January 4, 1943 - January 5, 2022) was a General Motors plant manager from Anderson, Indiana, whose mother and three wives all died in circumstances that were later reinvestigated. In December 1994 his third wife, Roberta Mowery Amos, was found dead in a suite at the Atheneum Hotel in Detroit, where the couple had gone for a company Christmas party. He said she had died accidentally during sex; the autopsy found fifteen times the quantity of cocaine needed to kill. Prosecutors argued he had given her wine laced with crushed sedatives, injected her with cocaine and smothered her when she convulsed.
His first wife, Saundra Heard Amos, 36, died at their Anderson home in 1979, which he attributed to a fall; a neighbour later said she found him burning her clothes. His mother, Mary Toles, 76, died in 1988 after he moved in with her, with no autopsy performed and no diagnosis found; he inherited more than a million dollars. His second wife, Carolyn, died in 1989, found beside a full bath after he brought her a glass of wine that was later found rinsed and in the dishwasher, and he collected $800,000 in insurance.
A change in Michigan law allowed evidence of those three deaths to be put before the jury at his trial for Roberta's murder. He was convicted on October 24, 1996 of premeditated murder and of murder by poison, and sentenced to life without parole. He died at Lakeland Correctional Facility on January 5, 2022, the day after his 79th birthday.
Four deaths are attributed to him and one produced a conviction. Investigators in Madison and Henry counties reopened the three earlier cases during his trial, but no charges were ever brought in any of them. He is flagged here as a man convicted of one murder rather than an established serial killer.
