Lin was born in 1982 and lived in Nantou County, Taiwan. She had substantial gambling debts.
Between 2008 and 2009 three people close to her died: her mother, Hou Yueyun, fifty-three; her mother-in-law, Zheng Huishen, forty-seven; and her husband, Liu Yuhang, twenty-seven. One was pushed down a flight of steps and the others were poisoned. She had taken out or benefited from insurance on each.
She was convicted and initially sentenced to death on one count and to life imprisonment on two others. The Taichung branch of the high court subsequently reduced the death sentence, leaving her serving three life terms.
Taiwan retains the death penalty and carries out executions, so the reduction was a substantive outcome rather than a formality.
The accessible sourcing is Taiwanese press reporting. The third victim is not named in anything available, and there is no published judgment.
