Lam Kwok-wai was born in Hong Kong in 1971. Between 1992 and 1993 he raped women in Tuen Mun, in the New Territories, and killed three of them.
He was convicted of ten rapes and three murders. He killed with his bare hands, and referred to his right hand as his fork. He was known in Hong Kong as Sik Moh.
Li Hing, fifty, was found in the Yau Oi estate in Tuen Mun. Mak Siu-han, twenty-two, was found in Hing Shing House, also in Tuen Mun. Lau Sui-man, twenty-three, was found at Hung Hom, across the harbour in Kowloon.
He was arrested on August 9, 1993 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The setting matters and was missing. Tuen Mun was laid out from a government drawing board in the late 1970s as a self-contained satellite town for four hundred and eighty thousand people. When cheap labour across the border drew the manufacturers away, its residents were left commuting for hours into Kowloon and Hong Kong for work. A journalist who wrote about the case described concrete tower blocks under sodium light, shrivelled trees and broken playgrounds, truancy and juvenile crime among the highest in the territory, the Sun Yee On triad running the building sites and the loan-sharking and recruiting in the schoolyards, and the worst rate of child abuse in Hong Kong. His nickname, the Tuen Mun rapist, is the name of that town.
He is one of the two cases usually described as Hong Kong's known serial killers, the other being Lam Kor-wan, who has his own entry in this archive. The similarity of the surnames is coincidence and the two are unconnected, which is worth stating because the entries sit next to each other in an alphabetical list and are confused in secondary sources.
He was portrayed in the 1994 Hong Kong film Tun Men se mo, released in English as The Rapist.
