On the night of December 23 and into December 24, 1934, Kathryn Dempsey Schoch shot and killed six members of her family: her sister Ruth Dempsey Hughes, thirty-seven, her brother Walter Dempsey, forty-two, and Walter's four children, Robert, twelve, and three others. She then took poison and died on December 24.
The wire reports of the day described her as grief-crazed and gave a family bereavement and her own illness as the explanation, in the language of 1934 Associated Press copy. That is the whole of the accessible account. The surviving note breaks off mid-sentence, which is a fair representation of how much of the case survives at all.
