Nawaz was a Pakistani national working in the Emirates. He hired taxis in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, offered the driver a soft drink containing a concentrated agricultural pesticide, and robbed him when he collapsed. Five drivers died; the roster places the deaths on a single date, July 4, 2000, which is more likely the date of the last of them or of the incident that exposed the series.
He was convicted and sentenced to death on May 29, 2001. The appeal court upheld the sentence, and the high court rejected a further appeal, reported on March 1, 2004.
Whether the sentence was carried out is not recorded in anything accessible. Executions in the Emirates are rare, are not routinely announced, and in murder cases may be affected by the victims' families under the qisas provisions, which allow the heirs to accept compensation instead. Nothing available says what happened after 2004.
