Mogale was born in 1968 or 1969 and operated around Westonaria and Lenasia, on the mining belt south west of Johannesburg. The police called the unknown attacker the West End serial killer.
Between 2008 and 2009 he approached women in the street and at taxi ranks, offering employment or presenting himself as a prophet who would pray with them, and took them to open veld, where he raped and strangled them. Sixteen bodies were recovered. Nineteen counts of rape were also proved, including of women who survived. South African reporting called him the West-End serial killer.
He was arrested and tried in the South Gauteng High Court, and on March 17, 2011 was given sixteen life sentences to run concurrently, together with a further twenty-three years, and was declared unfit for parole.
The recruitment method is the part worth recording. Unemployment in that area was such that an offer of work from a stranger was worth following, and presenting himself as a religious figure removed the rest of the hesitation. The women who survived described both approaches.
