Ocampo was born in 1988 and served in the United States Marine Corps in Iraq, returning to Orange County, California, in 2010. His family and friends described a marked deterioration after he came back.
In October 2011 he killed Raquel Estrada and her son Juan Herrera, the mother and brother of a school friend, at their home. Between December 2011 and January 2012 he stabbed four homeless men to death in Yorba Linda, Placentia and Anaheim: James McGillivray, Lloyd Middaugh, Paulus Smit and John Berry. The attacks on men sleeping in the open caused something close to panic among homeless people in the county, and outreach workers moved people indoors. The four were James McGillivray, fifty-three; Lloyd Middaugh, known as Jim, forty-two; Paulus Smit, fifty-seven; and John Barry, sixty-four.
He was arrested on January 13, 2012 after being chased down by witnesses.
He was never tried. He was found competent, then his condition deteriorated in custody, and on November 27, 2013 he killed himself in the Orange County jail by drinking a cleaning solvent.
