Geralds was born in 1964 and lived in Chicago. He had an intellectual disability, accepted at his trial, and used drugs heavily.
In 1994 and 1995 women were suffocated in the Englewood area of the south side, most of them using drugs. He was arrested in the summer of 1995 and charged with six killings.
He was convicted and sentenced to death in December 1997.
One of those convictions did not hold. The killing of Rhonda King was subsequently matched by DNA to Andre Crawford, another man who was killing women in the same neighbourhood in the same period and who was convicted of eleven murders. Geralds' conviction for that death was vacated.
On January 10, 2003 Governor George Ryan commuted every Illinois death sentence, and his became life imprisonment.
Two things belong on the page. A man with an intellectual disability was convicted of six killings and one of them was somebody else's, in a neighbourhood where two men were killing the same kind of victim at the same time and where the police were treating the deaths as one series. And the correction came from DNA, years later, not from the investigation.
