Graham was born in 1958 and lived in a rented room in the Frankford district of Philadelphia. He had an intellectual disability and used drugs heavily. He was known as Marty.
In August 1987 his landlord, having evicted him, broke down a nailed-shut door and found the decomposed remains of six women inside; a seventh body was found on the roof. The women had been strangled during or after sex, over a period of about a year, and he had continued living in the room with them.
He surrendered to police on August 17, 1987.
He was convicted and in May 1988 sentenced to life imprisonment followed by six death sentences, a disposition the court structured explicitly so that he could never be released.
On December 20, 2003 he was found incompetent to be executed, on the ground that he could not understand the punishment or the reason for it, and his death sentences were vacated. He is serving life.
