Hadden Clark was convicted of two murders in Maryland, six years apart, and is the subject of a great deal of claimed detail that has never been established.
He was born in 1951, came from a family with a history of mental illness, and worked as a cook. Michelle Dorr, six, disappeared from her father's garden in Silver Spring in 1986. Laura Houghteling, twenty-three, a Harvard graduate, disappeared from her mother's house in Bethesda in 1992, where Clark had worked as a gardener; a pillowcase with her blood and his fingerprint on it was found.
He was arrested on November 6, 1992 and in June 1993 pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the Houghteling case, receiving thirty years. In 1999 he was convicted of the murder of Michelle Dorr; a further thirty years were added, plus ten for an old robbery charge. He later led investigators to buried caches of jewellery and other items taken from women, and claimed a much larger number of killings, none of which has been substantiated.
This roster's characteristic field describes him as a cross-dressing cannibal. The cross-dressing is documented in case records. The cannibalism is not established by any court finding and rests on his own claims and on secondary accounts, and the entry notes it on that basis rather than repeating it as fact.
