Garza Hoth was known in the Mexican press as el viudo negro, the black widower. Between 1991 and 1997 three women connected to him died: Soledad Valdez, in April 1991; Marcela Munoz Palacios, in October 1992; and Ana Gloria Gomezpalacio, in May 1997. Two were poisoned and one shot. He held or benefited from insurance on them.
The deaths were separated by years and were investigated individually at the time. He was arrested after the third and convicted on October 27, 2000, receiving forty-five years.
