Frank Athen Walls (October 12, 1967 - December 18, 2025) killed five people in Okaloosa County, Florida, between March 1985 and July 1987, beginning when he was 17. He was arrested on July 24, 1987, the day after the bodies of the last two victims were found, when his roommate reported his behaviour to police.
The case that put him on death row was the July 1987 home invasion at the mobile home of Eglin Air Force Base airman Edward Alger and his girlfriend Ann Peterson. Walls tied the couple up; when Alger broke free and fought back, Walls cut his throat and then shot him, and shot Peterson as she struggled. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1988, the Florida Supreme Court reversed and ordered a retrial, and in 1992 he was again convicted and sentenced to death. DNA later linked him to the May 1987 rape and murder of Audrey Gygi, 47, to which he pleaded no contest, avoiding a second capital trial. He confessed to further killings, including those of Tommie Lou Whiddon, 19, and Cynthia Sue Condra, 24.
He was convicted of three murders in total, of five attributed. He spent 37 years on death row. His lawyers pursued a claim that he was intellectually disabled and therefore ineligible for execution; the Florida Supreme Court ordered an evidentiary hearing on that claim, and appeals were still pending before the United States Supreme Court when the warrant was carried out. He was executed by lethal injection on December 18, 2025, the nineteenth execution in Florida that year and the most the state had carried out in a single year.
