Ransom was born in 1906 and was having an affair with Lawrence Fisher, a farmer, whose wife Dorothy lived apart from him at Crittenden House in Matfield, Kent.
On the afternoon of July 9, 1940 she travelled to the house and shot three people with a shotgun: Dorothy Fisher; her daughter Freda, nineteen; and the maid, Charlotte Saunders. The bodies were found in the garden and the house.
She was traced through a glove found at the scene, a witness who had seen a woman in a fur coat carrying what looked like a golf bag, and evidence that she had practised with a shotgun. She was convicted at the Old Bailey and sentenced to death on November 12, 1940.
Days before the execution she was found insane and reprieved, and she was committed to Broadmoor, where she died in 1966.
The case was tried in the second month of the Blitz and received far less attention than it otherwise would have, which is why a triple murder in the home counties is now little known. This is a single act, not a serial case.
