The roster carries her as Edlira Dobrushi. Dobrushi is her husband's name; the Italian record calls her Edlira Copa, and both names are in use.
She was born in 1976 in Albania and lived at Chiuso, a district on the edge of Lecco in Lombardy. Her husband, Bashkim Dobrushi, had recently left her for another woman, and she had fallen into a severe depression that was not being treated.
On the night of March 8 and into March 9, 2014, she killed her three daughters with a kitchen knife: Simona, thirteen; Keisi, ten; and Sidny, three. The two younger girls were killed in their sleep. Simona saw what was happening, tried to get away, and was pursued. There were around ninety wounds in all. She laid the bodies on a bed and tried to kill herself with the same knife, and failed. When police arrived she said at once that she had done it.
She was not convicted. A psychiatric examination ordered a month after the killings, and confirmed at trial, found she had been incapable of understanding or willing her actions: an acute paranoid psychosis, sharpened by the separation, that predated the killings although she had never been treated for it. On May 19, 2015, at an abbreviated-procedure hearing at Lecco, the judge acquitted her for total insanity and imposed a security measure of ten years in a judicial psychiatric facility, on the finding that she remained dangerous. She was sent to the former psychiatric hospital at Castiglione delle Stiviere.
In June 2019, a little over five years after the killings, she was granted semi-liberty: she left Castiglione delle Stiviere for a supervised facility in the Lecco area with permission to leave it during the day. The decision was reported nationally and her former husband, who has since remarried, said publicly that he would not forgive her and did not want to know where she was.
This is a single act, not a serial case. The entry that stood here said she was in prison awaiting trial, which was the position in 2014 and is a decade out of date: there was a trial, it ended in an acquittal, and she has been out during the day since 2019.
