Spencer was born in 1967. Three of her children died: a son in Pennsylvania in August 1983, when she was sixteen, and two daughters in Michigan in September 1987 and September 1990. Each death was attributed at the time to sudden infant death or natural causes.
After the third death the sequence was examined and she was charged. She was convicted in Michigan and sentenced to life imprisonment on March 13, 1992, and was subsequently prosecuted in connection with the earlier deaths.
