This is a correction, not a serial killer biography. Dean Faiello killed one person, by incompetence rather than intent, and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He appears on serial killer lists because the details are lurid, and he does not belong on them.
He was born in 1958, worked in various jobs including as a tile setter, and in the 1990s set himself up in Manhattan as a cosmetic dermatologist, using the name of a real doctor and offering laser removal of tattoos, hair and blemishes from a well-appointed office on East 76th Street. He had no medical qualification of any kind. He was well spoken, well connected socially, and had a substantial celebrity clientele. The New York press called him the Bogus Doctor, which is the accurate charge against him.
In April 2003 Maria Cruz, a thirty-five-year-old Filipina banker working at Barclays in New York, went to him to have a mark removed from her tongue. He injected her with lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, in a dose and manner that caused her to go into seizure. He did not call an ambulance. She died, and he put her body in a suitcase and buried it in concrete in the garage of a house he owned in Newark, New Jersey.
He was already under investigation for practising medicine without a licence and fled to Costa Rica, where he was found in 2004 and returned. Maria Cruz's body was recovered from the garage in 2005. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2006 and was sentenced to twenty years.
