On April 17, 1992, a detective from the Hollywood, Florida Police Department sat down with Jeffrey Dahmer in an interview room at the Columbia Correctional Facility in Portage, Wisconsin, with an agent from the FBI's Milwaukee office beside him and a tape running, and asked him about Adam Walsh. The transcript runs forty pages, and this file holds a second copy of it, the one the Bureau serialized into its own case file the following August. Dahmer talks about being processed out of the Army six months early for drinking, about the plane ticket to Miami, the weeks sleeping under the mangroves on the beach and showering once or twice a week in someone's hotel room, the job at Sunshine Subs on Collins Avenue where the owner paid him under the table while he drew unemployment. Asked whether he feels badly about what he has done, he says he does, and that it does no one any good to cry crocodile tears and put on a big act. Asked whether he ever killed animals before he killed a person, he says he never did, that he only ever used dead ones. At the end he goes on the record that he had nothing to do with the Walsh killing, and thanks the detective for the muffins and the book.
That transcript is the reason this file matters, and it sits inside a much larger thing. What the Bureau released under file number 7-MW-26057 is seven bound sections, 1,224 pages, and only the first two are the Milwaukee field office's own case file. Sections three and four, nearly half the release, are the Sub A files, which in Bureau practice means the newspaper clippings an office cuts out and keeps. Section five is a thin headquarters file. Sections six and seven are the laboratory's, under two different numbers, and record what Washington found when the Milwaukee police sent it the contents of Apartment 213: the stained carpet and mattress fabric, the hand saw, the drill, the filter from a shop vacuum, the Myoda laptop that would not boot, bone marrow and teeth and a section of skull with drill holes, and the DNA and blood-group work that put names to what was left of Tony Hughes and Jeremiah Weinberger. The other copy of that April statement, with the FD-302 cover sheets the Bureau wrapped around it, is already on its own page in this archive; this is the file both copies came from, and the one here reads more cleanly in places, which is why the two are worth having side by side.
The Milwaukee file itself is mostly the Bureau being asked for help in the two weeks after July 22, 1991. The St. Louis office pulls Dahmer's Army personnel record and reports the informal counseling sessions, the alcohol program and the discharge; the Legal Attache in Bonn checks Baumholder; Buffalo, Newark, Norfolk, Oklahoma City, Minneapolis and Seattle canvass their police departments for unsolved cases that might fit and report back that they have none. There are teletypes about the identification of Edward Smith and of the man first carried as Turner, and a memorandum recording that the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office was handling the identifications. And in the second section there is a set of interview reports from August 1992 in which an agent summarizes, in his own words, what Dahmer told the Bureau about the fantasies that began in his teens, the drilling and the acid, the mannequin stolen from the Boston Store, the knife with the rubber grips, and what he called the prison in his own mind.
Read it knowing what it is not. The Bureau never had a case against Dahmer, who was a Wisconsin defendant from the night of his arrest; there is no Bureau theory of the murders here and no finding. Half the pages are somebody else's copyright and are not printed. And the scan is among the worst in this archive, so that the one document a reader will most want to quote, the Hollywood transcript, should be quoted from the other copy, where the speaker labels survived. A word about its date, because the file invites a mistake. The scanner reads the transcript's own date line as 4-13-92, and the Bureau's serial stamps on the same pages say August 17, 1992, which is the day Milwaukee filed it. Read against the other copy the question settles itself: the same opening at 1330 hours, the same questions in the same order, the same close at 1445 with the muffins. It is the April 17 interview. Whether the Hollywood detectives went back to Portage a second time that summer is not something either copy can tell us.
The Hollywood transcript is printed below without speaker labels, and that is a decision, not an accident. The typed original alternates Q and A in the usual way, but the images the Bureau released are 72 dots to the inch, and the machine reading them lost the label on nearly every question and turned some answers into questions and some questions into answers. We tried restoring the labels from the shape of the lines and stopped when the result put a detective's words in Dahmer's mouth, which is the one error a transcript page must not make. So the turns are here, in order, as paragraphs, and a reader will mostly be able to tell who is speaking. Where you cannot, do not guess and do not quote. The other copy of the same April 17, 1992 statement is on its own page in this archive with its labels intact, and the two can be read against each other: this copy recovers words the other lost, the other copy tells you who said them. The FBI holds the original under file 7-MW-26057, and a Freedom of Information request is the way to a clean copy.
Everything else Dahmer is quoted as saying in this file is an agent's summary. The interview reports in the second section, dated August 1992, are FD-302s, the Bureau's form for an agent's account of a conversation, and they read "DAHMER stated" a hundred times because that is how a 302 is written. They are not his words and cannot be quoted as his words; they are what one agent understood him to have said, typed up afterwards, and they are printed here because they are the record of what the Bureau was told. Where the same ground is covered by the Milwaukee police statement in the interviews section of this archive, prefer that, which is a transcript.
Sections three and four, 479 of the 1,224 pages, are not printed. They are the Milwaukee office's Sub A files, the newspaper and magazine coverage of the case that agents clipped and filed from July 1991 onward, and a newspaper's copyright is not extinguished by an FBI stamp. The Bureau's own paperwork is a federal record and free to reproduce; so are the Milwaukee Police Department's evidence inventories and the medical examiner's material that the laboratory sections carry, which are public records of Wisconsin agencies. The first section also holds about fifty pages of Dahmer's Army personnel file from Baumholder, obtained by the St. Louis office in July 1991: counseling forms, a hay fever note, the elimination recommendation, the honorable discharge certificate, all of it scanned to unreadability, and all of it summarized in a St. Louis teletype that is printed. Those forms are described here rather than printed, both because they cannot be read and because a soldier's medical record is not made public by being copied into a murder file.
This scan is bad in a way the Bureau itself warned about. Every section opens with a sheet saying the best copy obtainable has been included and that blurred pages are the condition of the original. The images behind the text are 600 pixels wide, and the capture we worked from found that reading them at higher resolution made the result worse, not better. Across the whole file six words in ten are dictionary words; in the laboratory sections it is about one in two. We ran the standard repairs, closed scattered letters, repaired 4,436 misread words where one real word fit, split 3,966 the scan had welded, and undid the repairs the source contradicted, and then read every surviving passage against a gate that most of them failed. What is printed is 18,238 words of the Bureau's paperwork and 11,331 of the transcript, from 377,344 the scan recovered. The deleted-page sheets, of which there are dozens, are described in one sentence: pages were withheld throughout under exemptions 7(C) and 7(D), for the privacy of third parties and for material that originated with other agencies, chiefly the Milwaukee police. Dahmer's own name comes through as DAHKER, DAHHER, DABMER and DARMER, and we have left the machine's spellings where they fall in the agents' reports, because a repaired name is a guessed name.

DAKMER wat the subject of numerous actions on the part of military authorities for alcohol abuse, Hie file reflects numerous periods of counseling by enlisted personnel and officers regarding his behavior and actions that were a result of his alcohol abuse, wotetions in his military file reflect counseling on August 8, 1980, August 11, 1960, September 2, 1980, 1581. DAHMER way enrolled in an alcoholic rehabilitation program ‘from February 5, 1981, but stated he did not enter into the treatment program and indicated he was not willing to control his alcohol intake. On Watch 24, 1961, DAHMER was transferred from Germany to Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he was discharged on March 26, 21981 with an honorable discharge.
DAHMER denied having any contact with local authorities while in Germany and further denied any homosexual activities while in Germany. He further denies ever having travelled to any location to meet with homosexuals and has not had any Correspondence with anyone residing in Germany after his return to the United States.
DAHMER stated that he travelled in October of 1960 to Munich for the October Fest and stayed there for several days and also travelled to Lansthul (phonetic) Germany for training and 7 temporary assignment for two months. He further stated that he travelled on short trips to areas around Baumholder but did not stay overnight.
It has been determined that DAHMER was accompanied to a ad military aircraft for travel from Germany to Fort Jackson, South Carolina and he has denied having returned to Germany Since his military discharge. DAHMER does not have a US. passport nor has any relatives living in Germany.
