Hill was born in 1929 in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. He was nine years old when the shootings began. The New Jersey press called him the Duck Island Killer, after the place the couples parked.
Between 1938 and 1940 he fired on cars parked at a spot outside town used by courting couples, shooting into them from cover. Six people died and others were wounded. The shootings were unsolved for years and were attributed at the time to an adult.
The six who died were Vincent Tonzello, twenty, and Mary Mytovich, sixteen; Frank Casper, twenty-eight, and Katherine Werner, thirty-six; and Ludovicum Kovacs, twenty-five, and Carolina Maroconi, twenty-four.
He was arrested on January 28, 1944, at fourteen, and confessed. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on December 29, 1944.
He was released in 1964, after twenty years, and died of natural causes on July 9, 1973.
The age is the whole of it. A child of nine to eleven shot six people dead over two years with a rifle, and this archive contains no younger case with a comparable count. The contemporary record gives no account of his home, his family or how he obtained the weapon, and the psychiatric material that would exist for such a case today does not exist for this one.
