Christopher M Zikode operated around Donnybrook, a small town in the Natal midlands in South Africa, in the early 1990s. South African reporting calls him the Donnybrook Killer. He was born in 1974 and was in his late teens when the killings began.
Between 1993 and 1995 he attacked couples in the rural areas around the town, shooting the men and raping the women before killing them. Eighteen people died, most of them between twenty and thirty. The Natal midlands in that period were in the middle of severe political violence between the ANC and Inkatha, and a series of killings of young people in the countryside did not immediately register as the work of one man.
He was arrested on September 29, 1995.
He was convicted and sentenced on January 7, 1997 to a prison term of 140 years. The Donnybrook case is one of a group of South African serial murder investigations from the mid-1990s, alongside Sithole and Simons, that arrived together in the first years after the transition and led to the creation of the South African Police Service's Investigative Psychology Unit.
