On the morning of August 8, 1973, Elmer Wayne Henley, seventeen years old, shot Dean Corll dead in a house at 2020 Lamar in Pasadena, Texas, and told the officers who arrested him that there were bodies in a rented boat stall across the city. By that evening Houston homicide detectives had the stall at 4500 Silver Bell open, twelve feet wide and thirty deep, and prisoners from the city jail were digging up its floor with shovels. Eighteen inches down they found the first body, nude, wrapped in clear plastic. Eight had been carried out to the Harris County morgue by the time Lieutenant Kersten stopped the digging for the night and left a patrol unit to guard the door.
This is the Houston Police Department's own file on what followed: thirty-eight documents and 259 pages, from the offense report on the first unidentified body to a property printout made in 1996. The spine of it is master case D-68904, six supplementary reports in which the detectives write down, shift by shift, what they did. The stall is measured and its contents listed, a rake against the wall, a stripped Camaro, lime around the bodies. The graves are numbered as they are opened. There are the trips east with Henley to the woods near Lake Sam Rayburn in San Augustine County, where he led the officers and Sheriff Hoyt to two graves and then two more, and with David Brooks to the beach at High Island, where he walked to a slab of broken cement and said that was the rock Dean had pointed out to him. There are the telephone calls from parents, the tips about other men, and the dental charts carried to the morgue for Dr. Joseph Jachimczyk, the county medical examiner, who put names to the bodies one at a time through August.
The file reads differently from the story as it is usually told, because the officers who wrote it did not yet know the story. On July 26, 1973, Charles Cobble and Marty Jones both telephoned their fathers, crying, to say they were in serious trouble and needed money right away. For the next two weeks the missing-persons detectives chased a drug debt: a man who had pulled a shotgun on Jones over twenty lids of marijuana, an apartment on Hollister Street, a mother whose son's car had turned up abandoned in a doctor's parking lot. They were still working that theory the morning Henley named both boys as buried in the stall. Elsewhere in these pages a woman who had worked for the Corll Candy Company remembers Dean Corll digging behind the building on West 22nd in 1965 or 1966 and telling her he was burying spoiled candy because the bees would get into it. Detectives got the owner's permission and dug there. They found nothing. Corll's parents, Arnold and Mary, ask the officers to consider that Brooks and Henley were lying to cover for themselves, and show them a calendar in the Pasadena house with the thirty-first marked with a double circle, the day their son was supposed to marry Betty Hawkins and leave for Colorado.
Twenty-seven bodies were recovered from the three sites before the digging stopped. This file pairs with the transcript of Henley's 1974 trial, which is also in this archive and is where the surviving boys' accounts were finally given under oath. Here they are heard only through the detectives, and the detectives are heard through a scan that a machine could barely read.
Neither Henley nor Brooks speaks in his own words anywhere on this page, and it is important to be clear about that before reading a line of it. Both gave written statements, and the reports refer to them constantly, "for details see his written statement," but the statements themselves were not in the release. What is here is Detective Tucker's account that Brooks "orally admitted" being present at many murders, an officer's summary of Brooks telling his father that he had not actually taken a life, and Henley's directions to graves as the officers who followed him wrote them down. That is evidence of what the police recorded, not a transcript of what the boys said. For their sworn words there is the Henley trial transcript.
A police file is written by people who have not finished finding out, and this one shows it. Every murdered boy is a "complainant" and every body has a number before it has a name. The two-week search for Cobble and Jones was pointed at a marijuana debt until the morning it was not. Tips are written up as they came in: a man in an apartment on Wirt Road whose home was found in shambles, a water department employee who remembered a white van and three men with a pick and shovel on Knight Road, a father who wanted a man his son had known placed under watch, a letter from a man in Los Angeles whom the LAPD described as a Nazi Party member who writes letters. None of those people was ever charged with anything in connection with this case, and their names appear here because an officer typed them onto a supplement in 1973, not because anything was ever found. Read the tips as what they are.
These are municipal records of the City of Houston, released under the Texas Public Information Act to a private researcher who deposited the scans in a public archive in 2019, and there is nothing to clear. Certified copies come from the Houston Police Department records division under the file numbers printed as headings. Two of the thirty-eight documents are modern computer printouts rather than 1973 typescript. One is a June 1996 property-disposition supplement on the murder of Wally Jay Simoneaux, recording a hold on an evidence tag, and it belongs here. The other is a March 2006 report of a car broken into in the parking lot of an auto repair shop on West Fuqua, which has nothing to do with Dean Corll and appears to have been swept into the release by mistake. It names a living private citizen as the complainant and we have not printed it.
This is the worst scan in the Documents category by a wide margin, and the number that says so is in the file's own provenance header: two optical character recognition engines were run over sample pages of the largest report and agreed on nineteen per cent of the words. These are 1973 carbon copies of typescript on pre-printed forms, and the machine read the caption grid and the typed entries across each other, so that on many pages two lines of a paragraph arrive braided into one. The conservative engine recovered 57,038 words. We print 8,766 of them in 142 passages, about one word in six, and the fraction is the honest measure of the file. What is missing is not furniture. The grave-by-grave description in Report 1 survives for some graves and not others. Report 3's account of the Sam Rayburn graves, two bodies wrapped in plastic under a masonite board, one of them dug up by animals and reburied, is woven with the caption text and is described here rather than printed. Most of Rhonda Williams's interview, in which she told detectives that Frank Aguirre had been her fiance and that Henley had told her to forget him because he was never coming back, survives only as the fragment printed under Report 4. Henley's remark at High Island on the night of August 10, that they had always come at night and the beach looked different to him by day, is in a paragraph too damaged to print.
What we did to the text is mechanical, and where we went further we say so. Runs of scattered letters were closed, 434 misread words were repaired where exactly one real word fit the damage, and every repair was run back against the scan; forty came back, most of them a word the scanner had welded to the article after it, which we split. Capitalized words were not touched, so the county medical examiner appears as Jachimuzylc, Jachimcyzk and Jachimeyzk, Henley as Hennley, Corll as Cerli and Corill, and Marty Jones's mother as "3etty Shirley" at "1413 Waseoo", exactly as the machine read the typist. Where a paragraph dissolved into two woven columns partway through, we stopped it at its last whole sentence rather than print the weave; six passages end that way, and five more begin after a caption strip that had fused onto their first line. Six of the thirty-eight documents, D-68907, D-68908, D-68920, D-68921, D-68923 and D-68927, are not reports at all but microfilm slips stating that the report was missing when the series was filmed and would be spliced to the end of the reel if found. Three more, D-68922, D-68924 and D-68929, returned no words, and the aerial photograph sheets and the two list sheets read as nothing but their case caption. Nothing has been added, completed or guessed at.
One document in the older missing-person files deserves a word of its own. Jeffrey Konen was a University of Texas student who set out to hitchhike from Austin to his parents' home in Houston on Friday, September 25, 1970. The report opened three days later records a driver who thought he had picked the boy up on Interstate 10 that Sunday morning, a call from United Press, an anonymous woman who believed she had seen him working in a coffee shop in Lafayette, Louisiana, and his father telephoning the division for months. The file was still being added to in October 1971. The other older file carries a signed release granting KTRK Television permission to broadcast a missing thirteen-year-old's photograph, which we have printed because it shows what a family in Houston could do in 1973 to find a son, and how little.
