John Wayne Gacy will forever go down into history as one of the most sadistic diseased serial killers of all time. He's known worldwide for the crimes he committed and will go down as one of the most notorious "real-life" monsters to ever walk this planet. Carrying a substantial count of 33 bodies later mostly to be found underneath his residential family home, filled with all young men and boys disposed corpses. Gacy's downfall was his last victim he leered in December of 1978.
Robert Piest a 15 year old boy had just got off his work shift from the pharmacy and was just being picked up by his mother, after conversation Robert told his mother that he'd be right back and was heading to talk to a contractor about a future job he was offered. As time passed Roberts mother became worried and distraught by the minute, she finally went inside of his work and gathered people up for a search but he was no where to be found. Three hours after the boys disappearance, the Des Plaines police were notified. The first lead followed straight back to a well known contributor in town John Wayne Gacy as he was the most known and obvious contractor in the area. Police decided to question Gacy 2 days later at his home notifying him about the missing boy. Gacy stated he knew nothing about the boy and didn't know who he was, police thought otherwise. Stating to Gacy that they had evidence against him, and asked if he would accompany them to the police station for further questioning, but Gacy refused otherwise. He stated there had been a family death, and he needed to attend some phone calls then agreed he would head down to the station. Several hours later Gacy gave a statement saying he knew nothing about the missing boy, and had no info on his disappearance, leaving at his own will without further questioning Gacy went on his way.
Police decided to Dig a little further in Gacys past to see if anything came up, eventually getting a break. Showing on a simple background check validating that Gacy was charged with sodomizing a teen age boy 10 years prior. He only served an 18 month sentence and was released upon good behavior. With Gacys record police now had a 24 hour surveillance on their suspect. Following him up and down every road, but Gacy was great at evading as he drove quite fast and was always going places around town in a hurry. Police finally obtained a search warrant to the house based on Gacys prior convection, hoping to find Robert Piest alive and well. Police described Gacys house very neat and organized. They collected numerous items such as handcuffs, and belts, as well as the most devastating evidence which was a class ring belonging to a recent graduate. Things were starting to get more eerie and bizarre as police concluded that 2 other men who were 17 and missing for 2 years had previously worked for Gacy. Other evidence showed a receipt in one of the boys jackets proving Gacy had contact with him in some way, former employees also told police Gacy asked them to dig future trenches under the crawl space.
Police worked for a second search warrant as they started putting all the pieces together from everyone's statements and conclusion along with all the evidence from the first search warrant. They believed they would be getting a confession very soon from Mr. Gacy. Gacy later stated he knew his run was soon to be over so he contemplated with suicide as he went to say his last fair wells to everyone. His first stop was at a local Shell gas station, police proceeded to follow and arrest Gacy for possession of an illegal substance. On the night of December 21, 1978 while Gacy was held at the Des Plaines Police department, police executed their second search warrant at Gacy's residential home. Some officers searched upstairs while two others proceeded down through the crawl space with a shovel, while digging it didn't take long for police to find bones. At this exact time Gacy had complained of chest pains and was transported to the nearby hospital where detectives followed up with him. Just as Gacy was leaving the hospital, detectives got the call about the bodies, Gacy was then informed of their findings and was placed under arrest for murder. He eventually elaborated to police that he was ready to come clean and confess to the grizzly murders. He went into great detail with detectives from the first murder and described how he did it. Gacy stated the first murder he committed was result of stabbing his victim to death, saying how bloody and messy it was. From then on out Gacy used all types of tools and mechanisms for strangulation.
Police stated Gacy was every bit of unremorseful in the confession room, as he explained how he tortured and murdered all young men and boys. From day on out bodies were being discovered by the hours at Gacys home, the crime scene brought very large crowds from all over the place despite the freezing temperatures. People truly could not comprehend what they were witnessing, body bag after body bag. Officials speculated the total body count would very high but nothing could prepare them for the total count. Gacy provided police with a sketch of his underground graveyard of bodies to help locate the victims, knowingly where each and every body was but never identified who they were. In the final stages of the search the entire house was demolished and 29 bodies were found. Gacy discussed to investigators that the majority of the victims he killed were buried in the crawlspace and on his property. He also elaborated that he threw the last couple of bodies off the I-55 bridge and into the Des Plaines River that were later on discovered.
During the trail Gacy didn't' confess to anything and thought he was going to be a free man through reason of insanity. The evidence and bodies found were more than damaging enough to convict John Wayne Gacy showing he was in complete control of his actions. In the end John Wayne Gacy was sentenced to death by lethal injection on May 10, 1994 approximately 12:58 AM at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. His brain was immediately taken in for evaluation but doctors never could find any reasoning to that would drive John Wayne Gacy to commit one of the most horrifying murder sprees in a century.
