Caryn Eilene Campbell was twenty-three, a registered nurse from Michigan, and she was on a skiing trip with the doctor she lived with and his two children. On the evening of Sunday, January 12, 1975, she left the three of them in the lobby of the Wildwood Inn at Snowmass and went back upstairs to Room 210 to fetch a magazine. She did not come back. At 10:30 that night Officers Carson and Wieditz were dispatched by radio, and at 10:47 they arrived at the room. The call was logged as MISSING PERSON, ADULT.
Her body was found five weeks later off the Owl Creek road. The reporting officer drove the route afterward with a Seiko wristwatch, timing the distance between where she was found and the hotel she vanished from, and wrote the measurements into the file.
This is the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department's case file, number 75-0078, and it starts at the point where nobody knew anything at all.
Ted Bundy is not in this file. His name does not appear once in seventy-six pages, and that is the single most useful thing to know before reading it. He was charged with Caryn Campbell's murder in 1975, escaped twice from Colorado custody while the case was pending, and was never tried for it. What the sheriff's department was actually doing through the early months of 1975 is what these pages record, and it did not involve him.
What it involved was a local man the investigators questioned at length, whose name is in here forty-nine times. He was never charged with anything, and nothing in this file amounts to a finding about him. Read the interviews for what they are: officers canvassing hotel staff, ski-resort workers and acquaintances, writing down what each one said about another employee, including the opinions they offered unprompted. A county case file preserves suspicion as readily as it preserves fact, and the difference is not marked on the page.
County government records of a Colorado sheriff's department, released under the Colorado Open Records Act to a private researcher who deposited the scan in a public archive. Public record, free to reproduce, and the reason this one can be published whole. For a certified copy the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office in Aspen holds case 75-0078; the Colorado Ninth Judicial District Attorney's own prosecution file for the same killing runs to ninety documents and is not in our hands.
Most of what is on these seventy-six pages is not printed here. Every sheet is a pre-printed report form: the top two thirds a grid of field captions and boxes, the bottom third the officer's typed narrative. Scanned, the grid produces rows like "Reported by Address Home Phone Business Phone How Reported Received by Time Day Date Officer Assigned", and the rejoining that makes the narrative readable also welds those captions and the disposition checkboxes onto it. So we selected for the narrative rather than filtering the forms out, stripped the caption text wherever it had attached itself, and kept 213 passages. Two things we lifted out of the forms by hand are in the paragraphs above: the dispatch and arrival times, and the complaint classification.
The typing was underlined by overstriking, and the scan read the rules as punctuation welded into the words - "All-.of Lhe~above" for "All of the above", "beds had been slept.in" for "slept in". We stripped the underscores and the dot and dash leaders, removed the scanner debris token by token rather than throwing away the sentences it sat in, and put back a space or closed a word only where the result is a real word, which is what leaves "Dr. Clark" and "Room No. 210" alone. Two earlier versions of that cleaning did real damage before this one: the first deleted the periods that end sentences, turning "Dr. Gadowski" into "Dr Gadowski"; the second treated "vacant since Dec." as a finished sentence and left the date stranded seven paragraphs away. Both were caught and fixed, because a filter that alters punctuation is altering the document.
Fourteen passages are not printed, judged sentence by sentence rather than whole, and one of them matters enough to name. The autopsy summary - Dr. Clark at the Denver Coroner's office, the stomach contents putting death two to five hours after the victim last ate, blood and organs sent for toxicology, and blows to the back and side of the head - survives here only in fragments, because the paragraph carrying the findings scanned as a smear with its real words scattered through it, reading as 'ta"°rrh'S'"S bra" K brain nPini0."rrr: zw;'. No repair recovers that, and the coroner's own report is the document to ask Pitkin County for. One passage was dropped for a different reason: a fragment reading "She was found dead" whose subject the scan had destroyed, which on this page a reader would take for Caryn Campbell, and it is not her. What is printed reads at 88 per cent dictionary words with about one part in eight hundred scanner debris.
The sheriff's office kept carbon copies of its own supplementary reports, and both copies are in the scan, so a few passages exist twice in two different states of damage. Where that happened we kept the cleaner copy. One finding was lost from both: on the clean sheet the numbered line recording that an old skull fracture and a scar on the scalp matched an injury Caryn Campbell suffered in her senior year of high school - one of the identifications that let the office telephone her brother in Fort Lauderdale on February 18 - and on the carbon the same sentence scanned as "|k 1 in Street,: v old skull fractured". It is restored above from the capture itself, which is the document.
Both this Officer and Officer Wieditz were dispatched to Room of the Wildwood Inn on a missing person report. Upon arrival we did contact the Complainant who relayed the following to us.
105 lbs., brown shoulder-length hair, last seen wearing a beige wholly jacket and blue jeans, had left the doctor and his two children in the lobby of the Wildwood Inn and went back to their room. Room 210, to retrieve a magazine. The young lady has not returned as of this point. It should be indicated that Dr. Gadowski and Ms. Campbell had been living together for one year. Ms. Campbell is a registered nurse, has no history of any mental problems, is not any medication or drugs. Dr. Gadowski and Ms. Campbell and his children had been in Aspen for approx, two days. They had planned on leaving Jan. 19, 1975. An attempt to locate was aired by this Officer at approx.
