Amir Qayyum was a labourer in Lahore. The Pakistani press called him the brick killer, after the weapon.
Between June and July 2005 he killed fourteen men, all of them homeless: labourers sleeping in the open between shifts, beggars, and men with drug dependencies. He walked the streets at night with a brick or a heavy stone and brought it down on the heads of men who were asleep. He took nothing.
Lahore in summer has very large numbers of people sleeping outdoors, and the deaths of destitute men in the street were not initially connected. What produced the investigation was the rate: fourteen in six weeks in one city was too many to absorb.
He was arrested on July 18, 2005. His account, given to police and repeated to journalists, was that he had been in a road accident, that his own family had abandoned him afterwards, and that he was killing people who had nobody. He was assessed as competent.
He was convicted and sentenced to death in May 2006. Pakistan's use of the death penalty has been intermittent since, and the outcome of the sentence is not established in accessible sources.
