For us misfits who find ourselves intrigued with the world of macabre and murder there is an obligation to also ponder what it must feel like to be in the shoes of the victims whose lives are lost. Whether you’re the direct victim who has been offed or the surrounding loved ones who have been forever altered by the Killer’s misdeeds, it is an undesirable fate most of us could never even imagine. When a serial killer strikes there is so much more to take into account besides the death of a person. First off, aside from the fact that the deceased individual has suddenly had their life cut short, they also have been drudged through an often slow and painful amount of torture. The physical pain would have been immense, but the psychological mindsets experienced in their last moments on earth were probably worse to endure than whatever vicious method their killer chose.
To even begin to imagine their feelings think of that one moment in life when you were more petrified than ever before. While your moment of fear came and went with your life intact, these unfortunates had to face the harsh reality that this was real, they were about to die. A serial killer often strikes suddenly and without warning, causing one to react in pure panic. The victim in one moment is preoccupied with their current lives events and in the next they are staring death in the face. Victims also face sudden and complete loss of control over their own fate. Like falling from a skyscraper, there is not one option which could change the inevitable landing. Many imagine that when faced with death we’ll think about our loved ones, regret our mistakes, or go over our accomplishments in life. Truth be told, there is no saying how you will react or how it will be until the reaper is right upon you. Those who have been there cannot recount for us their last thoughts or feelings as they are among the deceased. However, spending your final moments with a serial killer must be among the top ten least sought after endings. All of us must at one point or another pass away, but the victims of serial killers have had their lives stolen, not lost.
How can you tell if you are a likely target for one of these monsters and what can you do to lessen the odds against you? Serial killers are so vast and different there is no telling who the next serial killer will be looking for. There is no gender, age, sexual preference, race, social standing or financial status that can exonerate anyone from a serial killers hit list. People of all types have falling prey to these savages. Like car accidents, there is no way to promise you will never experience one. But, there are ways to make it less likely.
Many associate prostitutes with serial killers because there have been so many cases of serial killers who have targeted them. It is however not simply the fact that they are prostitutes, but the aspects involved with prostitution that actually endanger them. Multiple qualities of the job description such as anonymity, seclusion, vulnerability, and social status make for a great scenario for serial murder. In other words, being well known, not alone, self-confidant, and liked by many are a few ways you can minimize your chances for meeting up with a serial killer.
Ask yourself; are you often heading to your car late at night by yourself? Are you too friendly or easy to fool? How often do you offer up a helping hand to a stranded driver or struggling civilian? Do you lock all your doors and windows at night? Now, ask yourself are you paranoid.
To sit in wonder over whether or not a serial killer will one day have you in his sights is no way to live. Paranoia over anything is unhealthy. Being well-liked or not alone are aspects of our life we can’t always control. Even if we don’t realize it all the time, our fate is never really in our control. Worry over something has never prevented it from happening. What we can do is simply do our best to prepare ourselves for any such confrontation should any such thing ever occur.
It is always good to know how to defend yourself. Even if your tactics are not that intimidating the simple knowledge that you have them at your disposal will put you more at ease and give you more self-confidence. If you are seriously concerned about your welfare than perhaps a few karate lessons will boost your confidence.
The screamers and fighters are unwanted by serial killers who target lonely victims in the night. They’d rather find someone who won’t kick up a fuss. Your attacker may be informing you that making a noise will result in your death. However, if killing you is his or her true intention then making noise is your only way out.
Usually when a serial killer is sighted by potential witnesses he flees the scene. So it takes the response of other people to counteract the serial killer’s intentions, but all are not willing to intervene in this type of dangerous situation. If in the grips of a serial killer attack, or any attack for that matter it is surprisingly not wise to scream “Help!” The sad sorry truth of the world we live in is that most people will not respond to cries for help for fear that the fate of the screamer may become their own. Therefore, it is wiser to scream “Fire!” when being attacked. Fire is a scene most people will allow themselves to get involved with because fire is a more predictable danger. People know that if they only get so close they will not be harmed, so they are willing to put themselves near harm’s way. Also, fire is a spectacle that most cannot resist poking their noses into, thus bettering your chances of outside intervention. In the meantime, the fact that this next proposed victim is screaming about a non-existent fire may also slow down and/or confuse the killer himself.
Buying time and using those expensive seconds to your advantage is your best chance at saving yourself. Perhaps the most important thing you can arm yourself with is composure. A flustered person lacks control and that is something serial killers often count on and lust after. They control the scene, they control when you live, die, and how. This control over life and death helps instill the feelings of supremeness some serial killers develop after several successful murders. They will begin to expect this easy kill and some may even take it for granted. They often fail to realize that a successful murder can depend on the willing participation of a victim to be scared and lose control. When thrown the curve ball of a composed victim you buy yourself time and leverage over the end results.
The best method of action will vary from case to case, and so it is left up to good judgment ultimately. Rational and logical decisions do not come about during moments of panic. Nothing guarantees you immunity from serial killers. Nothing guarantees death when one meets up with a serial killer. Like any possible danger in life all you can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
