ANDREW CUNANAN AMERICAN SPREE KILLER

Article BY Jason Wolfe - Art by PHILIP R. MERTZ

Andrew Cunanan, born August 31, 1979 is classified as an American spree killer, with five victims. He is the 449th fugitive to be added to the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. And the first person to be added from San Diego, California. I’m sure San Diego’s proud.

The first murder was Cunanans’ friend Jeffrey Tailer. Jeff sold propane and propane accessories, and was a Navy officer. He was killed April 27, 1997, in Minneapolis Minnesota. The next murder was of David Madson, an architect. He was killed at Rush Lake, near Rush City, MN on April 29, 1997.

Cunanan then thought it would be nice to take a road trip, and went to Chicago. That’s where he killed Lee Miglin, a 72 year old real-estate developer. Cunanan apparently liked his car, because he decided to take that all the way to Pennsville, New Jersey. Then on May 9, 1997 he happened to be taking a stroll through Finn’s Point National Cemetery, where he decided to kill its caretaker William Reese.

Cunanan then decided he liked Reeses’ pickup truck, and left Miglins’ car behind. He then took the truck all the way down to Miami Beach, Florida. There he indulged himself in the gay night clubs for months, without even making an attempt to disguise himself. After being around all those gay night clubs he comes across fashion designer Gianni Versace, and murders him on July 15, 1997. On July 23, 1997 Cunanan decides to kill himself with a shot gun inside a houseboat. For all those gun-nuts our there the gun that Cunanan preferred to kill people with was a Taurus semi-automatic pistol in .40 S&W caliber.

As for the motive, during the time he was on his killing spree people thought he had HIV, and that he was killing people because of that. Boy did those people have egg on their faces when the autopsy discovered that he didn’t even have HIV! He is also reported to be a male prostitute, his own mother called him a "high-class homosexual prostitute". This has caused people in the media to say that some of his victims were his clients. Though none of this has been proven. The only other things known about his private life is that his friends describe him as an intellectual who spoke several languages, and could easily discuss world affairs. He also sold drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine.

Andrew Cunanan the American spree killer from San Diego had a short life, killing himself at age 27. Throughout the course of his life he took five other people with him on his murderous road-trip, much like Bundy. Whatever he had hoped to achieve with his life what he’ll always be remembered for is being another notorious serial killer.
